to anyone whom i have given hostas to: how are they doing? i transplanted some at my parents house and i hope yours met a better fate than theirs! they are going the way of the buffalo, and quickly!
hostas are best moved in the early to mid-spring when they are in "bullet" stage- just fingers protruding from the ground aboiut 1-2 inches (before leaves open)
some people do it in the fall as it does not matter if the leaves rip then.
some peole say you can move them anytime as long as you wtaer them well; it takes them awhile to get established though.
i'm curious as to why yours are reacting so poorly from being moved. my guess would be our recent extreme heat like jenny suggested. if we were in your situation, we would probably give Oakland Nursery's help desk a call and ask for advice. (we've found them to be knowledgeable and helpful on several occasions).
mine are doing okay so far... i think they'll take! the ferns seem to be doing okay, too. i think with the right amount of water they will root pretty well.

i took some of those beautiful hostas. they came to me big and healthy and are limp and dying...
i wonder what i did wrong? I cut one back to the ground- but the others I am still holding out hope...
oh no! i wonder if it is just too stinkin hot to transplant? im sorry maureen!
no worries! i'm grateful! i wonder if the split/transplant happens more successfully in the autumn.
